CURIOSITY

lead reflect Jan 02, 2017

The anticipation and reality of a New Year comes with mixed emotion.  I often feel a bit of sadness as another year and holiday season pass, which is also goodbye to precious down, idle time with the kids.  It is also exciting and relieving (depending on the previous year)but never comes without an anticipatory anxious thread of expectation.  Inside the calm in the few days leading back to routi...

SUPERPOWER.

reflect Dec 10, 2016

He didn’t understand why we were there and if I’m being honest, neither did I.   These were my ideas, my fears, my “what-if’s”; he was just along for the ride.  This is one of the many things I love about him; he’s always willing and ready to show up when it counts.  I didn’t want us to wake-up someplace we didn’t want to be and not know how it happened.  I needed perspective and clarity.  There a...

AWAKE.

parent reflect Nov 23, 2016

It was a normal morning.  He even made them pancakes and for a school day, this is a treat. He hadn’t complained of any discomfort, there were no symptoms of what was to come.

Over these past couple weeks, I’ve become painfully aware of how much practice it takes to experience joy and gratitude in the presence of challenge.  In Brené Brown’s Gifts of Imperfection, she describes numbing as “taking...

PICTURE IT.

reflect Nov 03, 2016

I thought I’d choose a picture of me smiling and laughing. Having fun, being goofy.  It’s how I first recognize myself.  Other people know me this way.  I am comfortable laughing(even when I shouldn’t be).

The lesson this week was about cultivating authenticity, requiring me to find a photo capturing my authentic self.  A picture conveying a sense of who I am.  I went in looking with no expectati...

FEELS LIKE FALL.

parent reflect Sep 08, 2016

Cool mornings and short evenings, I love this time of year.  The season of new schedules and new routines are welcomed structure in our house.  September marks the final stretch of the year and inspires me to reset and evaluate personal and family goals.  The realities of real life also remind me of the importance of being flexible and open, contrary to my own timeline.

I love the perspective of ...

BEHIND THE MASK

reflect Aug 23, 2016

I do not think it was a coincidence--finding these journal entries last week or that they never made it to my blog.  As I was cleaning out an old flash drive and reading this, I was taken back to a very painful place.  The entries are not complete and I don't know why, but they tell enough of the story to understand where change made its imprint. These days were right in the middle of one of the m...

TUESDAY HAPPY

lead reflect May 20, 2016

As long as I can see the forest, I won’t get caught up in the trees.  It’s safer up here.  I’ve always been a big picture person.  A 10,000 ft. view of life is a clear and comforting place for me.

Lately, I find myself questioning how I value my time, is there something else I should be doing with this short life?  What’s missing?  In the midst of tragedy or crisis, it’s easy for me to be gratefu...

VIEW

reflect Feb 07, 2016

I complain about the overindulgent square footage of this home, too open, too spread out for the four of us. When I imagine us living somewhere else the house is smaller (but there are always plenty of windows). This house has an abundance of space; it shouldn’t feel so closed in.  However, the noise and constant activity of life at home with two small kiddos can make everything seem too close.  I...

THIRTY-EIGHT

reflect Apr 04, 2015

I can’t remember the last time we celebrated together.  Growing up, we would always spend our birthday together but over the years life seems to get in the way. This year, we had some making up to do.  There were more reasons than excuses to make it happen.

We’ve been together over 38 years now and there isn’t anyone I’d rather celebrate with than her. This year, my twin sister Tami and I decided...

WHY?

reflect Nov 04, 2014

I suppose I don’t do all of these things because I have to, my life could play out differently if I really wanted. There must be a reason. While I made choices early on that now require my daily commitment, like children, marriage and owning a business—that’s what it still is—a choice. I was beginning to get what he was really asking. What’s my motivation, why do I continue to make these choices?
